Winter Flower Arrangements: Daisies and Hydrangeas
Wednesday, December 26, 2012
I made these winter flower arrangements in small vintage vases, from just two bouquets that I bought at the supermarket. Though I love larger arrangments as well, there's something about these small groupings of individual vases that I tend to gravitate to. I like how each little vase has its own style. The flowers I used here are white daisies, carnations, green mini mums, and pale blue hydrangeas, along with some lacy greens (cedar or juniper?..I'm not sure). I think they would lend such a light and pretty air to a winter wedding.

A Very Merry Christmas!
Saturday, December 22, 2012
This year I decided to decorate for Christmas in Victorian style, inspired by Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. I kept the color palette very light, and included accents of gold, red, and pale winter blue. The framed silhouettes are made from vintage images (the lady can be found here at the Graphics Fairy blog) and I followed this tutorial on Etsy to make the pretty paper leaf topiaries. For the "JOY" banner, I chose an antique-style font and, using Photoshop, superimposed each letter over a background of faded vintage sheet music. The letters were printed onto plain cardstock, and I placed a few sprigs of holly where the ribbon was passed through.
We had the pheasant feathers from another occasion, and simply placed them in a vintage candlestick. The embroidery hoop was made by me, on linen fabric in a 7-inch hoop, and the mirror was a dollar-store find. In the dining room, I decorated the candelabra with ornaments, sprigs of holly, and a gold bow. During Victorian times, Christmas trees were traditionally tabletop size, so we got a tabletop tree as well, and adorned it with angels. I actually really like the tree in this size, and it's so low maintenance! It may become a new tradition in our home :)

Treasury Time: Vintage Peacock Wedding
Saturday, December 8, 2012
Pretty peacock colors are bold, bright and regal. If you're considering this popular wedding theme but don't want it to end up looking too over the top, include an eclectic mix of handmade and vintage items in shades of turquoise and teal, tempered with antiqued metallics. Instead of adding too much color to the bouquets and centerpieces, choose flowers such as hydrangea, ranunculus, peonies (or even carnations) in simple white. Use the feathers themselves sparingly, as accents. Included in my finds here are hand-cut place cards, vintage style table numbers in teal, and delicate cupcake toppers that look like real peacock feathers.
